How to get your business recommended by ChatGPT and other AI tools

Eight practical steps any local business can take, in order of impact.

Quick answer

AI tools recommend businesses they can verify. Let AI crawlers read your site, state your services, prices, area, and phone number in plain text, answer common questions in the first sentence, add structured data, keep your details identical across Google, Apple, Bing, and Yelp, earn real reviews, and keep your pages dated and current. No one can guarantee a mention, and no one can buy one.

How AI tools choose which businesses to name

When someone asks ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, or Google's AI Overviews for a local recommendation, the tool searches the web, reads a handful of pages, and names the businesses it can describe with confidence. It favors sources that state facts plainly, agree with each other, and look current. Your job is to be the easiest business to verify.

Eight steps, in order of impact

  1. Let AI crawlers in. Check that your robots.txt file doesn't block the crawlers AI tools use, such as OpenAI's OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search and PerplexityBot. Google's AI Overviews draw on Google's regular search index, so normal Google indexing matters too.
  2. Put your key facts in plain text. Your services, prices, service area, hours, and phone number should be written on the page itself, not only inside images, PDFs, or pop-ups that crawlers skip.
  3. Answer real questions in the first sentence. Write FAQs the way customers ask them, such as "How much does a family lawyer cost in Albuquerque?" Put the direct answer first, then the detail.
  4. Add structured data. Schema markup labels your business name, address, services, prices, and FAQs so machines don't have to guess.
  5. Keep your details identical everywhere. Your name, phone, and address should match across your website, Google Business Profile, Apple Business Connect, Bing Places, and Yelp. Mismatches make AI tools less confident that the listings describe the same business.
  6. Earn reviews and outside mentions. AI tools trust what others say about you more than what you say about yourself. Ask happy customers for Google reviews, and look for local press, chamber, and directory listings.
  7. Show that your information is current. Add visible "last updated" dates to pricing and FAQ pages, and update them when something changes.
  8. Add an llms.txt file. This plain-text summary of your business and key pages is a newer, informal convention, not an official standard. It is quick to add and gives AI tools a clean overview. Make yours with our free generator, or see ours.

What doesn't work

  • Fake or bought reviews. They break platform rules and can get your profile suspended.
  • Keyword stuffing. AI tools summarize meaning, so repeating "best web designer Albuquerque" twenty times adds nothing.
  • Anyone who guarantees results. No one controls which sources an AI tool cites.

How to check where you stand

Ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Claude the questions your customers ask, such as "Who's a good dentist near Old Town Albuquerque?" Note whether you appear, what each tool says about you, and which sources it cites. Repeat monthly. In Google Analytics, visits from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, and gemini.google.com show up as referral traffic.

Common questions

How do I get my business mentioned by ChatGPT?

Make your business easy to verify: state your services, prices, area, and contact details in plain text; answer common questions directly; add structured data; keep your details identical across Google, Apple, Bing, and Yelp; and earn real reviews and local mentions.

Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?

No. AI tools do not sell placement in their answers. You improve your chances by making accurate, consistent, well-supported information easy to find.

How long does it take to show up in AI answers?

It depends on how often each AI tool refreshes its sources and how many trusted places mention your business. It usually builds over several months, alongside local SEO.

What is generative engine optimization (GEO)?

GEO is the practice of making a website easy for AI tools to read, trust, and cite when they answer a question. KK Web Co. offers GEO setup from $995 as an add-on to any website.
